Promote intestinal transit: Eating tips for mega colon and dolichocolon

When the colon is abnormally long or thick, regulating digestion can be challenging, especially when combined with other conditions such as irritable bowel.

The different shapes of the colon or large intestine can make intestinal transit difficult.

When the colon is abnormally long, it is called a dolichocolon. If it is wider, it is called a mega colon. In some people both characteristics are combined, in the so-called dolichomega colon.

These anomalies favor the accumulation of a greater volume of feces and facilitate fermentation and putrefaction.

Those who have them may feel that many foods do not suit them, and that they must eat very early so that digestion does not get in the way of rest.

If in addition to them there are other food peculiarities, such as intolerances to certain foods; or if they simply stop eating foods that are indigestible, they may worry that their diet is not providing them with enough nutrients.

However, with the right diet you can get a perfectly nutritious diet, regulate intestinal transit and avoid discomfort caused by fermentation such as gas or abdominal pain.

IS DOLICHOMEGACOLON THE SAME AS IRRITABLE BOWEL?

There is usually a correlation, although it is not necessary.

Irritable bowel can be a consequence of the above or be induced by intolerance to nutrients (the most common are lactose
and gluten).

It can also be a consequence of the regular use of medications (antibiotics, iron tablets …) or laxatives.

In addition, a basic emotional component that can trigger crises is often mentioned.

The different enzymes can help improve digestion and control chronic inflammation or excess tension in the stomach and intestinal walls.

Enzyme rich foods are papaya and pineapple. To improve digestion, you can also take a supplement rich in ferments, as well as incorporate them more frequently into the diet.

As important as this is to chew food well so that the enzymes that we have in saliva, stomach,
pancreas, intestine act.

Finally, a good measure is a moderate walk after eating, to facilitate intestinal transit.
